Welcome to Cape Town!
Are you working in a context where people anticipate or experience violence as part of daily living? I would value opportunities to talk! I understand these conditions as often affecting people who live in countries in crisis, people who are displaced, and those who live in inner cities.

Through my work as a clinical social worker with people and communities living in both the safe and unsafe spaces, I've focused on the impact of violence and trauma over two decades. Initially my work in my home city of Cape Town prompted questions about the obvious differences in presentation and recovery between my clients who saw their experience as relatively unusual and in the past, and those who not only had to cope with an awful experience that was one of many, but who worried about what could happen tomorrow. My work then took me to Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Uganda, raising such similar differences in presentation across such different contexts.

Bothered by this practice-related question, I came home to teach Humanities within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. This enabled me to work on a PhD that explores the processes of continuous traumatic stress associated with living in a dangerous community in Cape Town.

I'd also be happy to tell you about Cape Town, our people, my experience of Apartheid and democracy, possible sites to visit, or restaurants! Enjoy our city!
