Michelle is an Australian public health researcher with Irish and Scottish ancestry. Michelle facilitates participatory, action-oriented research with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and with people in the Pacific (Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands).

Current research interests include: resilience of Indigenous Australian boarding school students, suicide prevention, women and tuberculosis (Solomon Islands), social effects of climate change (Solomon Islands), and HIV/STI prevention (PNG and Solomon Islands). For her PhD, Michelle used participatory and decolonising methods in a Transformational Grounded Theory study to explore implications of male circumcision for women in PNG, including for HIV prevention.

Before focusing on public health research, Michelle practiced social work and human service management (mostly with a community development focus), in rural, remote and international settings (including Torres Strait Islands, Cape York, PNG, Solomon Islands, Aotearoa/NZ and Kosovo).
